Public bug reported: It used to be easy to add a PPA to the Other Software tab in Synaptic,
Click on "Add", a window comes up, cut/n/paste the APT line from the website's page that holds the PPA info, and click on "Add Source". Done. (possibly also fix a key problem...) Now, when one clicks on "New" (after selecting Setting-->Repositories), one is confronted by three boxes: "URI", "Distribution", and "Section(s)". When I wished to add mkusb, which was not in the Ubuntu repositories (for Lubuntu Next) I tried to figure out what to put in these boxes - and failed miserably. In previous versions of Synaptic, I would just have entered "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mkusb/ppa/ubuntu bionic main " into the field provided (I THINK that merely entering "ppa:mkusb/ppa" was enough, actually...) Now, I have to go to a terminal and enter: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mkusb/ppa sudo apt-get update come back to Synaptic (assuming that I hadn't needed to shut it down, first... I forget...) and click the refresh button, before I can select the package(s) desired... Why, when it was so simple and easy before, would the process have been changed to make it difficult/non-obvious to manage through Synaptic...? ---------------------------------------------------------------- scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ uname -a Linux scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS 4.15.0-20-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 24 06:16:15 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ lsb_release -dsc Ubuntu 18.04 LTS bionic scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION QLubuntu scott@scott-ASUS-M2N68-AM-PLUS:~$ apt-cache policy synaptic synaptic: Installed: 0.84.3ubuntu1 Candidate: 0.84.3ubuntu1 Version table: *** 0.84.3ubuntu1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ---------------------------------------------------------------- ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 Package: synaptic 0.84.3ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-20.21-generic 4.15.17 Uname: Linux 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: LXQt Date: Sun May 6 17:49:33 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-04-29 (7 days ago) InstallationMedia: Lubuntu-Next 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Alpha amd64 (20180421) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: synaptic UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug bionic ** Attachment added: "Add PPA - old method" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1769514/+attachment/5135065/+files/Synaptic_addPPA_old.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1769514 Title: How to add PPA with newer synaptic versions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/1769514/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
