Interestingly, after re-enabling wayland, the gnome-calculator no longer causes the system to hang and reboot.
I re-disabled wayland just to verify and the calculator again hung the system and caused a reboot... The only thing printed to the syslog when this happened was the following. Note this was captured via a tail -f running over ssh. After computer rebooted the following lines were no longer in the syslog so didn't get flushed to disk...
