The bug is only partially fixed:

1. Open a new gnome-terminal window
2. Open a new tab by pressing Ctrl+Shift+T
3. Maximize the window

At this point the terminal area is white and doesn't show the bash
prompt. After a pause that feels longish (but is probably about 1
second) it gets redrawn correctly.

4. Close the second tab by pressing Ctrl+D (or Ctrl+Shift+W)

At this point nothing changes on screen for a little while (another 1
second pause), then the entire terminal is painted white, pause again,
and only then it gets redrawn correctly.

When the window is not maximized, the redraws are instant.

Also, if you have a maximized terminal and play with different font
sizes in different tabs (press Ctrl-- or Ctrl-+), then start switching
between tabs with Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn, you get more redraw issues. With some
of them there is no redraw until you click the window, just waiting
doesn't help.
