Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 from ISO on an old Dell e1505
laptop with an intel i915 display chipset hardware acceleration works as
expected and full display resolution is available.

After running "sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt update" and rebooting the
system will hang a short ways into the boot process.

Getting past this point required adding "nomodeset" to the
/etc/default/grub file and running "update-grub2"

Then, hardware acceleration is disabled and the display will not go to
full resolution, llvmpipe is being used as the renderer according to
glxinfo

I went back to 17.10 in the meantime because display was working fine
there
