This bug affects us too. We tried working around the issue by switching to a locale which provides timestamps in a shorter format by default (e.g. DD.MM.YY) so it would still fit into the greeter box, but apparently simply overriding $LANG and $LC_TIME is not enough to affect the PAM messages.
