Thank you, Martin. I will explore changing my default view. I've always had it on detailed view so I'll be able to see the effect of that quickly.
If that fails I'll try the thunar file you directed me too. I remember I tried 15.10 when it came out but there were so many issues with it I went back to 15.04 which was rock solid for me (older glib2 so thunar was very stable). But 15.04 doesn't get security updates any any more so I took a gamble that the thunar bugs in 16.04 LTS were resolved.
