same thing (greyed out install updates during installation ) happened to me during install, both with wifi and with ethernet. Important as I cannot connect now to wifi ( sees transmitters but will not connect ) because I hoped during ethernet install it would correct and replace any bad drivers. Lubuntu 18.04
