Sorry scrap that, forgot to do apt-get update.
Once I did the update and run the workaround I still get issues doing
gem2 update
/usr/bin/gem2 update
Updating installed gems
Updating bigdecimal
ERROR: While executing gem ... (NameError)
uninitialized constant Gem::SafeYAML
