I followed the advice in
https://askubuntu.com/questions/971477/ubuntu-17-10-keeps-locking-up-
and-freezing-mouse-and-keyboard-input-doesnt-wor and added this to my
/etc/default/grub:

  quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=1

The system is stable since then. According to
https://gist.github.com/wmealing/2dd2b543c4d3cff6cab7 using cstate 1
might be a bit paranoid, so I will experiment with the maximum reliable
value.

Sorry I cannot test the upstream kernel, because I need the nvidia
driver/cuda combination for my daily work.
