It looks like the problem is either a bad sd card, or a bug in the kernel:


Phillip, you were right!  I ran a program called F3 and learned that the SD 
card was "fake".  It reported being 32 GB but only can store 16GB.  I bought SD 
2 cards at the same place so that is why the 2nd card gave the same error.

I resized the card using "f3fix", re-ran the install and it ran to
completion.
