The problem turned out to be unreproducible on a current 4.15.0-20-generic 
based Ubuntu 18.04. The (dist-)upgrade process from a latest and greatest 
Ubuntu 16.04.04 to 18.04 still needs to be repeated, but is a different issue 
anyway and will not be tracked or commented on here.
