SimpleScan or Xsane not detecting the scanner
You have changed the driver installation directory which makes all the hardware
requesting a proprietary driver incompatible with Ubuntu ...
Even installed drivers can work because Ubuntu looks in the wrong place
since the 4.15.0-20 Kernel.
