Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smartmontools

I upgraded to kubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) using an apt-cacher server that had
been pre-loaded from the kubuntu DVD image (there was also a functioning
internet connection).

On each machine smartmontools had been previously installed and working
in feisty. One was an x86 PATA machine, one was an x86 SATA machine and
one was an x86_64 SATA machine.

During the upgrade process smartmontools was eventually stopped/started.
The start failed and the upgrade process treated this as a fatal error
and hung completey. The apt-get install started by the upgrade tool
still existed, but was doing nothing. The upgrade tool grayed out the
terminal window and hung as well. I was able to recover by killing the
upgrade, doing a dpkg-reconfigure, uninstalling smartmontools and then
doing a dist-upgrade.

Given the variety of machines which had this problem, I strongly suspect
that any upgrade attempted with smartmontools installed will fail.

The log below seems pretty much identical to what I remember happened
during the upgrade:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mptables]$ sudo apt-get install smartmontools
