There's a workaround described at [1]: Install 'rlwrap' and run gnuplot as
rlwrap -a -c -b\"\\\"\\\"\\\'\\\'\" gnuplot
You can add
alias gnuplot="rlwrap -a -c -b\"\\\"\\\"\\\'\\\'\" gnuplot"
to your ~/.bashrc to do that automatically.
