Public bug reported:
Trying to install Java for Firefox in Gutsy, and having serious
problems. Gutsy has already forced me to try a number of complete
reinstallations and sometimes drives me back to Windows...
This problem began when I attempted to install gcj for Java programs to
execute from Firefox. It installs without error messages, but doesn't
actually work. The Java programs I've tested will only run poorly,
buggily, or not at all. So I tried to uninstall it and switch to Sun's
Java 6, but it appears that Firefox is hung up and continues to believe
that gcj is installed and should be used. I can reinstall it and get
back to the buggy state, but I cannot get Firefox to switch to the Sun
Java.
Obvious suggestion to other people: Don't install gcj, but use Sun. I
don't fully trust Sun, but I should have this time.
