The combo box selection is the "direct connection" regardless of what
has been saved and what is set up. Reproduction:
* setup an errornous proxy which will fail on updating sources and save and
restart
* check that the update fails (failing proxy is set up)
* open the proxy settings tab (it will be set to "direct connection"
* select the "direct connection" combo box item again (only now the
settings is set (at least until restart)) and apply
* verify that update works
