Solved! A few days ago I unplugged and reinserted it at both ends but still couldn't print. However, after making man software changes and still not printing, I unplugged the USB cable, flexed it at both ends, and reinserted it and Ubuntu immediately detected the printer, warned about drivers, and HP Device Mgr can print a great test page. Please note that the HPLIP that comes with Ubuntu 18.04 is missing dependencies and will not work without changes. Thanks!
