Thanks for your reply.  Since I've successfully installed Ubuntu 18.04
on the same machine with the same partition scheme and same USB key, the
bug may be closed now.

Last night, I repeated the installation to observe the error message,
which indicated a squashfs error.  I checked my live USB for integrity,
and found the system found two corrupted files there.

As a result, I recreated my live USB using UNetBootin, and ran the same
test from GRUB before the actual installation.
