miked: from the error messages you attached, it seems you have installed both 
-dbgsym and -dbg packages. These packages cannot be used at the same time and 
you should choose only one type of these. So it is normal to get error messages 
when you install a dbgsym package when the corresponding -dbg has already been 
installed.
To make sure updates will work again, you will have to remove the duplicated 
packages using synaptic.

>From the WIKI: Alternatively, main Ubuntu repositories could contain
'-dbg' debug symbol packages. Those are equivalent to '-dbgsym'. You
could use the one you want, but not both.

Please let us know if this solves the problem.
