@smustgrave and @ariake - I've attempted to cover some of the other
suspend issues I found whilst trying to work out where my machine was
going wrong in the first post here -

The XPS is tricky because there were some XPS suspend issues related to
s2idle (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029474/ubuntu-18-04-dell-
xps13-9370-no-longer-suspends-on-lid-close/1036122#1036122) and it also
has nVidia graphics which had a buggy nouveau driver (don't know if it's
been fixed yet) or could be an issue with the proprietary drivers.
s2idle issues and nVidia nouveau problem exhibited similar behaviour.

I'll be happy to try to help troubleshoot over on the Ubuntu forum
thread and hopefully you won't need the patched kernel to get suspend
working properly again.
