Oops! Apologies for the confusion. I cannot reproduce the original bug, but the system seems to get mightily confused if I suspend when there are several graphical users logged in. The suspend works fine, but the wakeup may drop one into any of the several logged in users.
I have not yet worked out the pattern of what it does. However I am now on Ubuntu 16.04, not 14.04.
