Public bug reported:

If you change the ownership of files in /home/<user> to another user,
you can no longer log into <user>'s gnome-shell session - instead, you
are either returned to the gdm login screen or the computer locks up.
This is even the case if .config and .local and .cache are completely
empty.

gdm/gnome-shell does not tell you what the error is, so it is very
annoying trying to figure out how to fix it. It would be great if the
user got an error message explaining the issue and how to fix it.
