Public bug reported:

Hi,
My NVIDIA drivers recently broke, perhaps after the kernel got updated by the
software updater. It also seems like the name of some nvidia packages has
changed, which may have caused inconsistencies. I have purged all installed
nvidia software using apt-get, rebooted. and then reinstalled
nvidia-driver-396. After I reboot again the drivers are still broken. I tried
this several times and googled, but to no avail. I still cannot open
nvidia-settings and some other 3D functionality does not seem to work. Also,
when I try to open one of the nvidia command line tools I sometimes get
messages indicating that something with Xorg is not right.

ERROR: The control display is undefined; please run `nvidia-settings --help`
for usage information.

I looked at help, but it is not really giving me useful suggestions as a
semi-noob. This is the Xorg config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf generated by
the nvidia installer

Does anyone have an idea of what I could try? Everything worked great
earlier, but something got messed up by the auto-updater. Any thoughts
would be greatly appreciated
