Hi G, Thank you for following up on this item. Fortunately, I can report that this is no longer a problem. Since I reported the bug my laptop died and I was able to transfer the complete Ubuntu system to the hard drive of a new HP laptop. It came with a W10 installation and EFI booting, but managed to boot automatically to Ubuntu and, of course, I use exclusively the Ubuntu boot ever since. No issues since that time with updates, cups or anything else.
I wish to thank the Ubuntu Team for their efforts to provide a decent open source Linux distro.
