solved! it was an xorg.conf bad configuration (not implemented explicitly by me, but probably since I ran `sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup`). The problem was resolved comparing the current xorg.conf to the original one. Unfortunately I did not keep a copy of the "bad" copy. In case anyone is interested I can try to reproduce...
