Public bug reported:

When enabling gnome-keyring ("SSH Key Agent") from the Default
Applications for LXSession tool, the agent gets started successfully and
it sets the SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variable correctly. However, `ssh-
add -l` returns "The agent has no identities."

If I start gnome-keyring manually, ~/.ssh/id_rsa is picked up. I can
also manually do `ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa` and it will work. ~/.ssh/id_rsa
is the only SSH key I have on this machine.

Doing `grep -R gnome_keyring /etc/pam.d` gives:

/etc/pam.d/lightdm-greeter:auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
/etc/pam.d/lightdm-greeter:session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
auto_start
/etc/pam.d/lightdm:auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
/etc/pam.d/lightdm:session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

I tried adding "password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so" to
/etc/pam.d/passwd but it had no effect.

There has been at least one another occurrence of this phenomenon:
