Well, it's strange...

The kernel you provided me works, but only half of it.

If I boot the above kernel it gives me the login screen, so it loads the driver 
correctly (I assume), but the laptop immediately freezes and I cannot do 
anything on it (I assume it kernel panics somewhere).
I have to make a hard shutdown using the power button and restart the computer.

Look, I am going on vacation now, I will not have the time, nor the
resources to inspect this further, and quite frankly I don't want to
mess up any more test kernels.

I left the 4.15.0-33 kernel, the latest stable kernel from Ubuntu and I
instructed the people using it to add the "nomodeset" parameter to boot
without loading Nouveau, but this is NOT a solution !

I helped you as much as I could.
Please analyze those nouveau commits. I am pretty sure the key to this problem 
is somewhere there, in those nouveau kernel modifs.
