Public bug reported:
I have a NVidia video card with a monitor and an onboard card that I use
for audio only. This worked fine before upgrading to Kubuntu 18.04. Now
to get sound working on the onboard hdmi port I need to enable a monitor
on the port in settings [System Settings > Display and Monitor >
Displays ] (which is useless because the video from that card is not
used). And then when the monitor [NVidia and so the onboard enabled as
well] goes to standby the sound stops as well. I need the sound to play
without the enabled monitor and to have it continue to play even when
the monitor goes to standby.
