Ok, so apparently the memory reported by Xorg may not be incorrect, according to <a href="http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=100228";>this post</a>.
"The reported amount of 'Memory' includes local video memory and system memory available for use by the GPU, i.e. it reflects the overall amount of memory available to the GPU." So I suppose it's back to the drawing board for me.
