I understand your desire to keep away from closed-source software, however testing with google-chrome would be very helpful as it would help determine whether the issue is one that affects the upstream project, or if it's specific to the ubuntu packages. If the former, then we can forward the bug upstream and hope to get upstream developers to help us diagnose and fix the issue.
