I've just borrowed an external graphics card (ATI) from the office and plugged it, and then it boots without a problem.
So it definitely has to do with the GPU I mentioned. It would be too much of a coincidence if this was a hardware problem I think, since the problem appeared immediately since the upgrade to 18.04.. Anymore thoughts?
