I verified - had broken OpenArena on KUbuntu 18.04 LTS, replaced the ioquake3 file with the version from ioquake3_1.36+u20160122+dfsg1-1_amd64 and it worked. Now I have a playable OpenArena. Many thanks to poster #17.
