I am accustomed to using "." in order to run an executable which is not locatable in PATH. Having experimented some by writing a trivial non-PATH executable script and calling it both with and without the preceding ".", I have learned something new about shell syntax. I have been holding on to an assumption which does not serve me, and which now I relinquish. This issue - mine, not yours - is resolved.
