Binary package hint: compiz
When "Blur Windows" is enabled I will occasionally be left with the
outline of a closed window on my desktop which will remain there until I
restart, or as I recently discovered, until I disable "Blur Windows" in
the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.
The best way I can describe it is as a shadowy outline of a window that
has been closed which remains on top of any window opened afterwards. It
is guaranteed to happen to the window used to enter my root password
when accessing Administration menus such as Synaptic Package Manager - a
shadow of the password window will "stain" the desktop.
