The sequence leading to the failed installation attempt was the following:
1) I started the machine and the operating system "Windows XP Home Edition" was
engaged.
2) I put the Ubuntu installation disk into the disk reader.
3) I restarted the machine.
4) When the machine restarted, I pressed the F12 button and a list of different
booting alternatives appeared.
5) I choosed the alternative "Boot from CD-ROM".
6) The first page in the Ubuntu installation sequence appeared.
7) I choosed the Swedish language for the installation by pressing F2.
8) The text in the screen changed to the Swedish language.
9) I selected the alternative "Börja installationen" (Start the installation in
English) and pressed "Enter".
10) The screen became black with the text mentioned above in white letters.
11) The installation halted, nothing more happened.
12) The screen remained black. In this moment. I didn't freeze like an
antelope, instead I tried to get rid of the black screen by pressing all
possible keys, but nothing
happened.
13) I pressed the Reset-button, the machine restarted and then I could shut the
machine down from Windows.
14) Attempts to start the installation by choosing other starting alternatives
like "Ubuntu in safe graphical mode" or "Text installation" led to exactly the
same behavior
by the system as mentioned above.
I have not checked the cd for errors, don't know how to do that, but I have
also tried to install Mandrake 10.2, Mandriva 2007 64-bit and Mandriva 2007
32-bit with similar results. It seems most improbable that all these
installation cd:s should be faulty in the same way.
The version of Ubuntu I purchased is enclosed in a package called "Pełna
wersja Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn na DVD" (Complete version of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty
Fawn on DVD). I also tried to contact the Ubuntu community, Ubuntu forum or
whatever you will call it, but the Ubuntu organisation claimed that such a
version doesn't exist, so I was blocked from the forum. However, I can assure
you that it exists, I am sitting here with the package in front of me.
My computer is new and contains the following hardware:
