I redid the install with the same next, next, next options (basically changed nothing as before) and it is working as it should. The only thing I noticed different aside from the ownership was that the first install had a ~/.config/pcmanfm-qt/default folder when I first began investigating why the settings weren't being saved, while the second install has none of that until changes are made. Anyway, all is working as it should.
