Public bug reported:

Attempted 18.04 -> 18.10 upgrade.

Having issues with Gnome on Xorg (logging in with Xorg won't load
desktop and returns to login) since kernel update in the summer. Gnome
of Wayland is functional, albeit incomplete. Running oilaf drivers for
AMD RX 580.

Not sure if this would be necessarily related.
