This may be a duplicate of bug 131526.
What GTK theme are you using? (Should be in System > Preferences > Appearance
or "gnome-appearance-properties").
The current best workaround seems to be using another Gnome theme, e.g.
"Human". It may also help to purge the openoffice.org packages and reinstall
them.
You may also want to start "oowriter" from a terminal and see what it spits out
there, when crashing.
