I have the same problem:
When using gnome-appearance-properties it kicks my CPU to 100%.
Even after closing the window, the process stays and uses 100% untill I kill it
manually.
"dpkg -l "gtk*engine*" | grep "^ii" | awk '{print $2}'" says:
gtk2-engines
gtk2-engines-pixbuf
gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks
