After some digging, on another computer, adding nomodeset to the kernal
startup parameters helps. Edited /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
$update-grub
provides a usable but degraded session.
The screen resolution is 1400x1050.
