Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When running compiz on ubuntu Gutsy, the screen stops accepting input
(keyboard or mouse) randomly (once or twice a day).

When the screen is blocked, the cursor still moves around the screen,
and keeps it's shape (arror, I ...).

It is possible to recover the screen using <ctrl><alt><sys>R then
<ctrl><alt><f5> to get to a usable console, and killing compiz.real from
this console.

Note: I tried to run xkill from the console (using export DISPLAY=:0)
but I was told that it couldn't grab the cursor.

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
