@Janos, I want to confirm that your experience with GIMP is backwards
from mine. I ran GIMP 2.8 the whole time I was on the older Lubuntu
(described in my first comment, 3 comments above) which PCManFM crashed
all the time. GIMP was fine for me then. When I installed Lubuntu 18.04
(fresh install) and installed GIMP (2.10.x), that's when PCManFM
continued crashing... and GIMP had joined the fun.

Your comment made me remember that I installed GIMP 2.10.x from a
flatpack. So, I uninstalled that and followed the directions (found with
Google search) to setup the PPA you mentioned, and install GIMP
(2.10.8).

It's too soon to say it's stopped crashing. But, wow! It loaded
*amazingly* fast. Something's different.

I just started strace for PCManFM, then started this (apt packaged)
GIMP. PCManFM's strace log quiesces when I'm in GIMP, doing things. (As
mentioned in my second comment, two comments above), the original
flatpack GIMP was causing massive logging activity. 60meg for 21
seconds. It's doing almost nothing right now.

It must be related somehow. Untill I report back otherwise, everyone can
assume GIMP stopped crashing.
