Hi, I reconfirm the problem, exactly as described above, with both Thunderbird and Firefox in 7.10. There seems to be some discussion going in this direction over here at the Japanese forum (http://forum.ubuntulinux.jp/viewtopic.php?id=881), and they suggest adding the Japanese repository (deb http://archive.ubuntulinux.jp /ubuntu-ja gutsy/) to the sources file.
Having done that, and checking for updates with Update Manager, it updates scim, anthy and the Japanese localization pack. After doing this, the problem is gone!
