Kubuntu still uses mysql by default for akoandi, and that is what the
akonadi-backend-mysql still has as its 1st choice dependency.

I note that on our current 18.04 daily iso and in a fairly stock
installed system, there has been no change or upgrade does or would
cause mariadb to replace mysql (just tried an apt-get dist-upgrade to
test. My best guess so far is that some other package (not a kubuntu
one) on your system changed dependency.
