I updated to 18.10 in place. That fixes the problem with the blank screen. Unfortunately the menu to the upper left does not seem to get focus. To logout I go to the upper right and type logout which loads a 'logout app.' I suppose that's a different bug.
Thank you for your help. Please let me know if you would like further testing.
