** Description changed:

Tried to upgrade 16.04.4 to 18.04.1 LTS. It installed and I restarted
the computer multiple times to see if it would boot to desktop, it
failed half the time - all I got was a black screen.

I have no log to post since the computer was unresponsive.

  NOTE:

Several other kernels have similar failure under this same circumstance
(these are ones I've tried upgrading with):
  4.15.0-33
  4.15.0-36

I have Googled other kernels from the 4.15.0+ series and all have bugs
saying they weren't booting. I read an article saying that 4.15+ kernel
is no longer supported and urged users to use 4.16+. Here's that
  article:

  https://news.softpedia.com/news/linux-kernel-4-15-reached-end-of-life-
  users-urged-to-move-to-linux-4-16-now-520787.shtml

  Article title:
Linux Kernel 4.15 Reached End of Life, Users Urged to Move to Linux 4.16 Now

I suspect this is why I haven't been able to upgrade to 18.04.1 since
4.15+ kernel is being used each time I've tried. Also I've never been
unable to upgrade before, now every kernel used is a bad one and won't
  boot my computer.
+
+ I have uninstalled the OS so I cannot help troubleshoot the boot bug
+ issue.
