It seems to be either/both the Domino style (
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Domino?content=42804&PHPSESSID=516bd742c46cfa29b0300b8af450b553)
or its Kore theme (
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Kore+for+Domino?content=55704&PHPSESSID=516bd742c46cfa29b0300b8af450b553).
After a fresh install, my GTK apps worked with the default Kubuntu theme,
but stopped after I installed the Kore Domino theme.
