I solved it - I think the problem occured when I change the icons from the gnome-look website to some cool ones. Here is what I did just in case someone else is having the same problem maybe it can help you.
1. I followed the instructions on gutsy on the power down issue 2. I found a web site that showed how to reset gnome 3.
