It is good to see at least some movement here. But if these efforts come to nothing (possible patches not accepted,...), I like dark2star's proposal most: If the vlc package is installed, make vlc the default DVD program.
I think that option should be doable for the Ubuntu team without having to get involved with upstream things. Sebastien, would that be doable?
