This is still a problem with Gutsy - actually NO mouse works (even a USB one) until the synaptics + tracpoint mice are turned off in BIOS setup (then the USB mouse works fine)
My guess is this is probably an xorg bug in how it handles multiple pointing devices - the devices are being multiplexed in /dev/input/mice but they use different protocols.
